A prayer for peace

“A prayer for peace”

2019 Christmas message

In the last month, the Catholic leader, Pope Francis visited Japan, and gave speeches of peace and nuclear abolition in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the cities where bombed by Atomic bombs.  His messages had reached and inspired many.  Yet shortly after such heartwarming experience, a Japanese medical doctor was shot to death in Afghanistan.  Dr. Tetsu Nakamura was a devoted volunteer doctor.  Not only a doctor, but he had built many irrigation canals in the desert, developed large area of green fields.

This made me think that peace cannot be reached even we gather much wisdom throughout the world.  The answer to this appears in the first Christmas message in the Bible;

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests. (Luke 2:14 NIV)”

This message was given to the shepherds by God.  And we must note the order of this message.  Firstly “Glory to God in the highest.”  This comes as the first thing.  In other words, instead of making ourselves absolute or being greedy for our desires, we must be humble in front of God, the creator.  We should start out from being fearful to God, and seeking for his glory.  Once this was done, then the following part of the prayer “on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests” can be achieved to the men on whom his favor rests.  “Seeking for peace” without following this order becomes vain.  They might obtain peace for a while, but would be lost quickly.

People on this earth may need to be humble to the words of God, and return to the Bible, especially in the month of December.

May I invite you to the church where the Christmas worship will be given in the month of December?
